Friday Five: oh, the places you’ll go without ever leaving your desk

My cousin does not approve of doing this, but sometimes I set my novels in places I’ve never been. Sometimes I even have my novels take place in cities I don’t ever plan on visiting…for example:

  1. Bogota
  2. El Paso
  3. Florida, NY
  4. Unspecified City, Indiana
  5. Caracas, Venezuela

Do you guys ever write about places you’ve never been?  Ever write about places you don’t ever plan on visiting?

  1. YES. Crap, I meant to say no, of course not, I'm a world-weary writer who knows everything.

  2. Well, yes. Especially when you consider that I'm writing a fantasy.

  3. I think it's totally fine to set your book in places you've never been...so long as you plan on going there one day. At least that's what I do! I've never been to any of your places either.

  4. It's too hard for me to do that because I need to know where I'm going in my head. Unless it's an abstract location where they may go. I'd totally like to pull a Stephanie Perkins and take a "research trip" to some awesome place like Paris (although I'm already going:))

  5. Yes of course. Wouldn't it be nice to travel for real everywhere I want to go...for now I'll go there in my mind.
