My cousin does not approve of doing this, but sometimes I set my novels in places I’ve never been. Sometimes I even have my novels take place in cities I don’t ever plan on visiting…for example:
- Bogota
- El Paso
- Florida, NY
- Unspecified City, Indiana
- Caracas, Venezuela
Do you guys ever write about places you’ve never been? Ever write about places you don’t ever plan on visiting?
YES. Crap, I meant to say no, of course not, I'm a world-weary writer who knows everything.
ReplyDeleteWell, yes. Especially when you consider that I'm writing a fantasy.
ReplyDeleteI think it's totally fine to set your book in places you've never been...so long as you plan on going there one day. At least that's what I do! I've never been to any of your places either.
ReplyDeleteIt's too hard for me to do that because I need to know where I'm going in my head. Unless it's an abstract location where they may go. I'd totally like to pull a Stephanie Perkins and take a "research trip" to some awesome place like Paris (although I'm already going:))
ReplyDeleteYes of course. Wouldn't it be nice to travel for real everywhere I want to go...for now I'll go there in my mind.
